GIS and decision making

GIS projects initially aimed to the automation of cartography.

The link between geometric entities and attributes as well as the adoption of interoperability standards opened new perspectives and fuelled new goals: the positioning of GIS as a key IT component, specialized in the management and analyse of spatial data.

However, the implementation of a GIS may be a complex process considering the number of potentially concerned actors, the heterogeneity of data, the business needs and the technical requirements.

Repositioning GIS as a key component of a decision-making system should contribute to the improvement of operational business processes.

This move requires besides GIS new tools, a change in terms of the implementation strategy. The adoption of an AGILE approach could bring more flexibility and adaptiveness to the process. The organization of project team, as well as the competencies of its members and their capacity of reformulate the business process play a capital role in this process.
